★ The Spicer-type axle shaft is recognised as a robust and reliable solution for Dana 25/27 front axles. This modern construction with universal joint offers years of reliability and simpler maintenance than the original Rzeppa ball bearings.
Application
This left-hand axle shaft is suitable for vehicles with Dana 25 or Dana 27 front axle and 10-spline drive. The Spicer-type shaft can be used as a replacement for original Rzeppa or Bendix shafts. Note: when replacing Bendix shafts, the bushing at the end of the axle tube (A6362) must be removed to provide adequate clearance.
Installation notes
Installation is carried out by removing the knuckles and sliding the shaft in from the rear. When converting from Bendix to Spicer: remove the axle tube bushing (A6362) for clearance. The universal joint is pre-greased but fill the knuckles up to the filler plug with knuckle grease. Steering angle limitation: approximately 27.5 degrees – check the steering stops on the shaft to prevent overloading.
Compatibility
Note: three different types of front axles are in use – Rzeppa (with ball bearings), Bendix, and Spicer. This Spicer shaft replaces all three types, but requires removal of the axle tube bushing when converting from Bendix. Not compatible with fine-spline shafts. Suitable for vehicles with closed knuckles, not for the open knuckles of 1971 onwards.
Historical context
The Spicer-type axle shaft appeared in the mid-1950s as a more modern successor to the original Rzeppa ball bearing design. The robust Cardan U-joint design proved highly reliable and became standard on later CJ models from approximately 1956, and was used as a replacement in M-series jeeps that remained in military service for extended periods.
