GEAR&PINION HYPOID BEVEL DRIVE GEAR SET
WOA789
Hypoid Crown Wheel & Drive Pinion Set – Ring & Pinion
For front axle and rear axle
Hypoid crown wheel and drive pinion set for differentials of military jeeps and civilian post-war models. These matched sets are crucial for correct power transmission in front and rear axles and must always be replaced as a pair.
|
Type Hypoid gear set (ring & pinion) |
Application Front and rear axle |
|
Axle type Dana 25 front / Dana 23, 25, 27 rear |
Ratio Depending on vehicle model (4.88:1 or 5.38:1) |
Features
- Hypoid gears for precise power transmission
- Crown wheel and drive pinion form a matched set
- Suitable for Dana 23, 25 and 27 differentials
- Requires professional fitting and adjustment
- Essential for correct four-wheel drive operation
★ Ring & pinion sets are always produced as matched pairs and must never be replaced individually. Professional installation with precise adjustment is required for long service life.
Application
Suitable for vehicles as listed in categories: Willys MB (front axle Dana 25), CJ-2A, CJ-3A, CJ-3B, M38 (front axle Dana 25, rear axle Dana 23/27). Note: Willys MB and Ford GPW originally used 4.88:1 ratio (39 teeth crown wheel, 8 teeth pinion), whilst early CJ models often had 5.38:1 ratio (43 teeth crown wheel, 8 teeth pinion). Front and rear ratios must always be identical.
Installation notes
Fitting requires specialist knowledge and tooling. The gears must be positioned to thousandths of an inch accuracy for correct tooth contact pattern. Only use matched sets – crown wheel and pinion are lapped together and must not be separated. Check ratio correspondence between front and rear axle before installation. Advice: have installation carried out by an experienced differential specialist.
Compatibility
Dana 25 front axle: fits MB, GPW, CJ-2A, CJ-3A, CJ-3B, M38. Dana 23 rear axle: early models. Dana 27 rear axle: later CJ models. IMPORTANT: Timken axles use spiral bevel gears, not hypoid – these sets are NOT compatible. Check that your vehicle has Spicer/Dana differentials (both types used from August 1951). Ratios are not interchangeable: 4.88:1 ≠ 5.38:1.
Historical context
Hypoid gears became standard in Spicer/Dana differentials from 1951, replacing the earlier spiral bevel design by Timken. The hypoid design offers quieter operation and higher load capacity through the offset contact between crown wheel and pinion.
