Differential Spider Gear Thrust Washer (Bevelled)

Small conical version

Bevelled thrust washer for the spider gears (differential pinions) in the differential. This small conical component ensures correct axial clearance and prevents direct metal-to-metal contact between the spider gears and the differential carrier.

Type

Small, conical (bevelled)

Application

Differential spider gears

Required quantity

2 pieces per differential

Axle type

Dana 23/25/27 front and rear

Features

  • Small conical (bevelled) thrust washer for spider gears
  • 2 pieces required per differential
  • Prevents wear between spider gears and differential carrier
  • For Dana 23/25/27 front and rear axles
  • Essential component during differential overhaul

★ Precision component for correct differential operation. Always replaced during differential overhaul.

Application

Front and rear axles with Dana 23/25/27 differential. Dana 25/27 front axles were used from 1941-1971 on various vehicles. Dana 23/27 rear axles also widely applied. Part of the spider gear set in the open differential.

Installation notes

Always replace in sets of 2 (per differential). The conical side must be correctly orientated against the spider gear. Check during assembly that the spider gears rotate smoothly without binding but also without excessive axial play. Combine with inspection of the flat (large) thrust washers for the side gears.

Compatibility

Fits Dana 23/25/27 differentials. NOTE: there are two types of thrust washers in a differential: this small conical one for the spider gears (pinion gears), and large flat ones for the side gears. Do not interchange. For Dana 41/44/53 axles a different version is required.

Historical context

The Dana/Spicer 23, 25 and 27 axles were extensively used by Willys-Overland and Ford on WWII jeeps and post-war civilian models. The open differential with spider gear configuration was robust and low-maintenance in field conditions.
