★ Essential for any rear axle overhaul. Modern materials provide better sealing than original felt or leather seals. Always replace all gaskets when dismantling the rear axle.
Application
The specific application depends on the type of Dana rear axle in your vehicle. Dana 27 (early MB/GPW 1941-1945), Dana 41 (early CJ-2A 1946-1949), Dana 44 (CJ-3A, M38, M38A1 and later models) each have different seals and gaskets. Check the axle number on your differential before ordering.
Installation notes
Inner axle seals are fitted from the inside after carrier removal — use a large socket or special seal installer to press them in straight and fully. Outer seals sit behind the wheel bearings on the shafts themselves. Apply differential cover gasket with thin layer of sealant. Always lubricate the lips of new seals with differential oil before fitting. Wheel bearing nuts: 42 ft-lb (Dana 27/41/44).
Compatibility
NOT interchangeable between different Dana axle numbers. Dana 27 uses smaller inner seals (OD 2", ID 1-1/8") than Dana 41/44. Dana 44 often has both inner and outer seals; some later versions only outer seal. Early Dana 44 (CJ/M38) had greaseable bearings with inner seal, later versions (XJ-era) only outer seal — the oil then lubricates the bearings. Always check your original configuration.
Historical context
Dana/Spicer supplied the axles for virtually all WWII Jeeps and post-war civilian models. The lighter Dana 23-2/25/27 for MB/GPW were replaced by heavier-duty Dana 41 and Dana 44 from the CJ-2A onwards, suitable for heavier use and higher loads.
