Rear Hub Dana 44

For semi-floating rear axle with tapered axle shafts

Replacement rear hub for Dana 44 and Dana 41 rear axles with tapered axle shafts. Suitable for vehicles with semi-floating rear axle where the hub is mounted on the outside of the brake drum. Replaces bent, cracked or worn original hubs.

Application

Dana 44 / Dana 41 rear axle

Axle type

Semi-floating with tapered axle shafts

Mounting

Outside of brake drum

OEM reference

811351

Features

  • For Dana 44 and Dana 41 semi-floating rear axles
  • Tapered axle shaft design
  • Hub mounts on outside of brake drum
  • Fitted with keyway for axle key
  • Wheel studs fitted using hydraulic press

★ Quality replacement for worn or damaged rear hubs. The keyway slot is susceptible to wear and cracking from years of use — a common issue with original hubs.

Installation notes

The hub is fitted onto the tapered axle shaft using a hydraulic press. When fitting, ensure correct orientation of the axle key — incorrect alignment can damage or crack the keyway slot. Use anti-seize compound on the tapered surfaces for future removal. A specialised three-jaw hub puller is required for removal.

Compatibility

Fits vehicles with Dana 44 or Dana 41 rear axle with tapered axle shafts (semi-floating). NOT suitable for full-floating axles or vehicles with flanged axles. If in doubt: check whether your rear axle has a tapered shaft with an axle key and a nut holding the hub in place.

Historical context

The Dana 44 with tapered axle shafts was the standard military rear axle for M38 and M38A1 vehicles and was also offered as a dealer option on civilian CJ models from 1946. The semi-floating design was simple and reliable for vehicles up to 1/2 tonne class.
