★ Authentic reproduction for historically correct restoration of early WWII jeeps. The split back design was a feature of the first 25,808 Slat Grille jeeps and remained in the supply chain until mid-1943.
Application
Specific to Willys MB Slat Grille (serial numbers up to approx. MB-25808, built November 1941 - March 1942) and early stamped grille MB until mid-1943. Also fits Hotchkiss M201 with split back seat configuration. The frame was part of the earliest WWII production where both driver and passenger seats featured split back design.
Installation notes
Mounting with original fixing points in the tub: one hole in the floor reinforcement on the outside (approx. 5 inches from tub wall, 13 inches from floor step) and one hole beside the centre tunnel. The rear tubular frame rests on the V-shaped support block on the wheelarch reinforcement. Fit the outer anchor point first, then position the frame to mark the inner location. Verify that the frame sits correctly on the wheelarch before final mounting.
Compatibility
DOES NOT FIT later standard MB/GPW with one-piece back seat frames (from mid-1943 to end of production). The split back frame is also not interchangeable with CJ-2A frames due to differences in leg construction. Only suitable for early MB configurations where both front seats had split back design. Later, split back frames were replaced by one-piece backs.
Historical context
The split back seat frames were a feature of the very first Willys MB production, including the rare Slat Grille jeeps with welded slat grille. Of the 361,339 MBs produced, only 25,808 were Slat Grille examples. The split frame design remained in use until mid-1943, when it was replaced by simpler one-piece backs.
