Application

The Universal Rifle Holder was fitted from September 1943 on WWII jeeps and many other military vehicles. The holder was attached to the inside of the lower windshield frame, with the weapon mounted upside down with the barrel pointing towards the passenger side. Primarily intended for the driver to store his weapon safely and with quick access.

Installation notes

Mounting requires mounting brackets (A11319 BRKT) which must be welded to the windshield frame. The holder is secured with coach bolts (round head with square shoulder) that fit into the square holes of the holder, with hexagonal nuts and spring washers on the other side. When fitting an M48 machine gun mount, the rifle holder must be relocated to a vertical position on the left side of the vehicle.

Compatibility

The Universal Rifle Holder was not a vehicle-specific part, but a universal item supplied by external contractors. There were, however, minor differences in fastening materials between Ford and Willys (Ford: 5/16" flat washers, Willys: 3/8"). Early versions had no metal/wire loop for the M3 Grease Gun; later versions did. Canvas covering and rubber bumpers are often missing from used examples but are easy to replace.

Historical context

The Universal Rifle Holder was introduced in October 1942 and underwent various modifications during production. From September 1943, the mounting brackets were welded to the windshield frame as standard at the factory. The holder was also used by French armed forces, sometimes identifiable by French markings on the metal.
