Application
These straps were used in combination with metal brackets to mount the US Army axe (single bit axe) and shovel (D-handle shovel). On MB and GPW, pioneer tools were mounted on the driver's side of the body, on the M38 on the passenger side. The straps worked together with footman loops attached to the body.
Installation notes
The straps are secured through the footman loops mounted on the body. The longer strap runs through the shovel handle, the shorter strap secures the axe. Ensure the tools are firmly secured whilst remaining usable. Exact positioning depends on the length of shovel and axe — shovels with sufficient 'lift' (distance between ground and handle-blade connection) fit better.
Compatibility
These straps are intended for use with standard US Army pioneer tools: D-handle shovel (approx. 36-39 inches) and single bit axe (approx. 5 inches). Early WWII vehicles sometimes had leather straps; canvas webbing became standard during and after WWII. Note: for correct mounting, the corresponding metal brackets (shovel bracket, axe clamps) and footman loops are also required.
Historical context
Pioneer tools (axe and shovel) were part of the standard organisational equipment of US Army units and were added to vehicles in the field. The canvas straps replaced the earlier leather version and remained in use long after WWII.
