  • Fixed clevis attachment to hand brake lever

  • Suitable for restoration to original specifications

★ Reproduction of the early-type hand brake cable as originally fitted to early production Willys MB jeeps with external band hand brake. Essential component for a correct restoration.

Application

Specifically for early Willys MB with external contracting brake. This type of hand brake was used on the first production series of the Willys MB and was later replaced by the internal expanding type. The Ford GPW used the external band system throughout its entire production.

Installation notes

Note: the external band hand brake requires correct adjustment of both the anchor bolt (for even clearance between band and drum) and cable length. Adjust the anchor bolt first before adjusting the cable. The clevis is attached to the hand brake lever with pin and split pin.

Compatibility

NOT compatible with late-type internal expanding hand brake — this requires a different cable with different connection. Note: early and late hand brake systems are not interchangeable without modification of the transfer case rear cover and associated components.

Historical context

The external band hand brake was the first version on the Willys MB and works by tightening a steel band around a drum on the transfer case. Later in the war, Willys switched to an internal expanding system, whilst Ford largely remained with the external type.
