Timing Gear Cover — Late Type

For engines with gear-driven camshaft

Cover for the timing gears on the Willys L-134 and F-134 engine with gear drive. This late type cover is suitable for engines from mid-1946 onwards, when Willys changed from chain drive to direct gear drive for the camshaft.

Application

L-134 and F-134 engine with gear drive

Type

Late model (gear driven)

Material

Steel

Category

Timing cover

Features

  • Suitable for L-134 and F-134 engines with gear drive
  • Late type (from mid-1946)
  • Protective cover for timing gears camshaft and crankshaft
  • Provided with sealing groove for crankshaft oil seal
  • Not compatible with early chain drive

★ Essential component for proper sealing and protection of the timing mechanism on late type engines.

Application

Suitable for late CJ-2A (from mid-1946), CJ-3A, CJ-3B, M38, M38A1 and related vehicles with L-134 or F-134 engine fitted with gear drive. NOT suitable for early MB, GPW or early CJ-2A with chain drive (before engine number 44418, approx. May 1946).

Installation notes

Note: the timing cover must be fitted with the correct gasket and oil seal. Before fitting, check that your engine has gear drive and not the older chain drive — the covers are NOT interchangeable. The timing cover is secured to the engine block with bolts and nuts through the timing cover and the front engine plate.

Compatibility

ONLY for engines with gear drive. Early L-134 engines (MB, GPW, early CJ-2A up to approx. May 1946) have a chain drive with a different type of cover. The transition from chain to gear drive occurred at engine number 44418 (mid-1946). Check your engine number or inspect visually: chain or gears behind the cover.

Historical context

From mid-1946, Willys changed from the original chain drive to direct gear drive for the camshaft, a more robust and lower-maintenance solution that was used in all subsequent L-134 and F-134 engines.
