Horn 12V Flat

Flat metal design

Flat metal horn for 12V electrical systems. This horn is suitable for jeeps converted from the original 6V to 12V system, or for civilian models equipped with 12V from the factory. The flat ('pancake') housing is a practical replacement for the longer Sparton horns.

Voltage

12 Volt

Design

Flat metal housing

Application

12V conversions and modifications

Connection

Single-wire with earth via housing

Features

  • 12V electric horn
  • Flat ('pancake') metal housing
  • Compact dimensions
  • Suitable for direct wiring or with relay
  • Replacement for 6V horns during conversion

★ Practical solution for 12V conversions. Using a relay extends service life and relieves the switch in the steering wheel.

Application

This horn is designed for use in jeeps converted to 12V electrical installation. Originally, Willys MB, Ford GPW and M38 vehicles were equipped with 6V systems, but many owners opted for conversion to 12V for better parts availability and easier maintenance. Civilian models such as late CJ-2A, CJ-3A, CJ-3B, M38A1 and later CJ models had 12V installation from the factory. The horn connects to the original horn button circuit in the steering wheel.

Installation notes

Mounting on the original horn bracket in the engine compartment. The horn can be connected directly to the existing horn circuit, but use of a relay is recommended to limit load on the contacts in the steering wheel. Note: never use a 6V horn on a 12V system — it will burn out after a short time.

Compatibility

IMPORTANT: This 12V horn is NOT suitable for original 6V systems (standard on WWII MB/GPW and M38). Only use on vehicles converted to 12V or equipped with 12V from the factory. If in doubt about your system's voltage: check first before installing. A 12V horn on a 6V system will work poorly or not at all; a 6V horn on a 12V system will burn out.

Historical context

During WWII, all Willys MB and Ford GPW jeeps were equipped with 6V Sparton horns. After the war, many owners began conversions to 12V for practical reasons, creating demand for 12V horns that fitted in the original mounting location.
