★ Universal nut used at multiple critical locations in the drivetrain — an essential component for a complete axle overhaul.

Application

This nut has multiple applications:

**Front axle shaft:** 2 pieces required per vehicle. Used on the threaded shaft ends of early Dana 25 front axles with Bendix or Rzeppa joints (Willys MB/GPW 1941-1945, CJ-2A, CJ-3A, early CJ-3B, M38).

**Rear axle shaft flange:** Used on flanged shaft ends of Dana 44 rear axles with 1-piece axle shafts (late CJ-3A from serial number #37549, CJ-3B, early CJ-5, M38A1).

**Pinion yoke:** 1 piece required per differential (front or rear). Secures the yoke to which the propeller shaft connects, both Dana 25/27 front and Dana 23/27/41/44 rear.

Installation notes

Note the correct application: castle nut version with split pin for threaded axle shafts, lock nut version for yokes and flanges. Check that the nut matches your specific axle configuration (early threaded shaft vs. late flanged shaft). Use appropriate torque wrench and locking devices (split pin or lockwasher) according to TM specifications.

Compatibility

**Dana 25 front axle (threaded shaft):** Willys MB, Ford GPW, CJ-2A, early CJ-3A, M38.

**Dana 44 rear axle (flanged shaft):** Late CJ-3A (from approx. 1950), CJ-3B, CJ-5, M38A1.

**Pinion yokes:** Various Dana axles in above vehicles.

Note: early Dana 25 axles had threaded axle shafts, later models flanged shafts. Early Dana 44 rear axles (before approx. 1950) used 2-piece tapered shafts with different nuts. Check your axle configuration before ordering.

Historical context

The Dana 25 front axle and Dana 44 rear axle were standard on military Jeeps and early civilian CJ models. Around 1950, Dana introduced flanged 1-piece axle shafts to replace the earlier threaded and tapered 2-piece designs, which significantly improved reliability and ease of maintenance.
