Starting crank replica Ford GPW

30 inch manual engine starter

Replica of the original starting crank for Ford GPW jeeps, marked with Ford script as per original. This hand crank was used to manually start the L-134 Go Devil engine when the battery was flat or the starter motor failed, and also served as a tool for adjusting valves and ignition timing.

Replica Ford version

Vehicle

Ford GPW

Emergency starting and engine adjustment

Features

  • Replica of original Ford starting crank
  • Authentically marked with Ford script and MH logo
  • One-piece construction 76 cm (30 inch)
  • Serrated nose for safe one-way engagement
  • Suitable for storage on rear panel with bracket

★ Replica to original Ford GPW specification with correct markings — essential tool for authentic restorations.

Application

Developed for Ford GPW (1942-1945) with L-134 Go Devil engine. Fits onto the serrated starter nut on the crankshaft pulley. Was supplied as standard with all WWII jeeps and stored behind the rear seat with bracket and wing nut mounting on the rear panel.

Installation notes

The starting crank engages the serrated starter nut on the crankshaft pulley via the front bumper. Safety technique: thumb BESIDE fingers (not around), stand perpendicular to the radiator, pull vigorously upwards. The serrated nose releases upon kickback. Storage: to be secured to rear panel with wing nut mounting (part A-2853/A-2470) and floor brackets.

Compatibility

Specific to Ford GPW. Willys MB used the same crank but with WO-A-289 marking. Both versions are technically identical (30 inch/76 cm) and mutually interchangeable. Do not use on vehicles with electronic ignition — consult manual for correct starting technique.

Historical context

All WWII jeeps — both Willys MB and Ford GPW — were supplied as standard with a starting crank as emergency tool. The Ford version was marked with the characteristic Ford script and MH logo (supplier code), whilst Willys cranks bore the WO-A-289 marking.
