Production period

1941-1945 (early production)

Part number

WO637065

Features

  • Original surplus quality (NOS)
  • For early L-134 'Go Devil' engine
  • Chain-driven camshaft
  • Suitable for WWII production
  • Critical component for correct engine timing

★ Authentic surplus part for the correct restoration of early WWII jeeps with chain-driven camshaft. Later in production, this system was replaced by gear drive.

Application

Suitable for early Willys L-134 'Go Devil' engines with chain-driven camshaft, as used in Willys MB (1941-1945), Ford GPW (1941-1945), early CJ-2A (1945-1946) and Hotchkiss M201. From mid-1946 (engine number 44417), the chain drive was replaced by gear drive. Note: not suitable for later engines with gear-driven camshaft.

Installation notes

The timing chain must always be replaced together with the matching sprockets for optimal fit and timing. During installation, carefully align the timing marks on crankshaft and camshaft sprockets. Check backlash after installation: no more than 3 degrees, ideally less than 1.5 degrees. Use a degree wheel for accurate timing adjustment.

Compatibility

IMPORTANT: This is ONLY for early L-134 engines with chain-driven camshaft. Most WWII MB and GPW engines had chain drive, but from July 1946 Willys switched to gear-driven camshafts. Later CJ-2A (after mid-1946), CJ-3A, CJ-3B, M38 and M38A1 have gear-driven systems and do NOT use a timing chain. Check the front of your engine block: a short boss or flat plate above the water pump indicates chain-type. If in doubt: check the engine number.

Historical context

The L-134 'Go Devil' engine with chain drive was standard in all WWII production Willys MB and Ford GPW jeeps. After the war, Willys switched to the quieter and lower-maintenance gear drive, although during material shortages in 1946-1948 chain engines were still temporarily installed.
