WOODRUFF CELORON CAMSHAFT
Woodruff key camshaft timing gear
3/16" × 3/4" — for celoron/fibre gear
Half-moon shaped Woodruff key for securing the camshaft timing gear to the camshaft. This key fits into the camshaft groove and prevents the gear from rotating, maintaining correct valve timing.

Size 3/16" × 3/4" (4.76 × 19 mm) |
Material Hardened steel |
|
Application Camshaft — gear drive |
Shape Half-moon (Woodruff) |
Features
- Half-moon design for optimal fit
- Hardened steel for durability
- Prevents camshaft timing gear slippage
- Essential for correct valve timing
- Size 3/16" × 3/4"
★ A small but essential component during any engine maintenance involving removal of the camshaft timing gear. The half-moon Woodruff key ensures reliable positioning of the gear on the camshaft.
Application
For engines with gear-driven camshaft (late CJ-2A from approx. 1947, CJ-3A, CJ-3B, M38). Fits both original celoron/fibre gears and metal replacement gears. Not for chain-driven engines (early MB/GPW/M201/early CJ-2A).
Installation notes
The Woodruff key is pressed into the camshaft groove — flat side outward. The camshaft timing gear is then tapped over it (do not force by sliding). Always check the timing marks on crankshaft and camshaft before finally bolting the gear in place.
Compatibility
ONLY for gear-driven engines (late CJ-2A, CJ-3A, CJ-3B, M38, M38A1). NOT compatible with chain-driven engines (MB, GPW, M201, early CJ-2A until approx. 1947) — these use sprockets, not gears, and have different mounting methods.
Historical context
The transition from chain to gear drive occurred midway through CJ-2A production (approx. 1947). The original camshaft timing gears were made of celoron (phenolic resin, also called fibre or bakelite) to run quietly, but these were often replaced with more durable metal gears during restorations.
