Application
This crankshaft is specific to early L-134 Go Devil engines with chain drive. According to product categories, suitable for Willys MB, Ford GPW, Hotchkiss M201 and early CJ-2A vehicles. The transition from chain to gear drive occurred mid-1946 (around engine serial number 44417-44418). Engines built until July 1946 had chain drive, later engines usually gear drive.
Installation notes
Note: chain drive crankshaft is NOT interchangeable with gear drive without modification of timing cover, camshaft, and oil pump. Before installation, check which system your engine has by removing the timing cover. Crankshaft is pre-drilled for flywheel mounting — verify that the centering pins of your flywheel match.
Compatibility
ONLY for engines with chain drive. Does NOT fit engines with gear drive without extensive conversion. Early Willys MB (1941-1945), Ford GPW (1941-1945), Hotchkiss M201, and early CJ-2A (1945-mid-1946) had chain drive. From mid-1946, Willys switched to gear drive. Some later production runs reverted to chain drive due to parts shortages.
Historical context
The L-134 'Go Devil' engine was developed by Willys chief engineer Delmar 'Barney' Roos and was the most powerful engine in the original jeep prototypes. Early wartime production used chain drive for the camshaft, a proven technique that was later replaced by the simpler and cheaper gear drive.
