Application
This 124-tooth version suits early CJ-3A (1949-1953) and M38 (1950-1952) with L-134 engine and 9-tooth starter motor. Note: MB, GPW, M201 and CJ-2A originally used a 97-tooth ring gear with 10-tooth starter motor. Always verify the tooth count of your original ring gear and starter motor before ordering.
Installation notes
The flywheel is drilled for four straight 3/8" bolts and two tapered flywheel bolts (3/8" UNF). If your crankshaft has four 3/8" bolts and two larger straight 9/16" bolts, the flywheel must be re-drilled/reamed. Ensure cylinder #1 is at TDC (top dead centre) and timing marks are correctly aligned before fitting the bellhousing. Always use new, hardened fasteners and torque to factory specifications.
Compatibility
IMPORTANT: The 124-tooth ring gear requires a 9-tooth starter motor. This combination does NOT fit MB/GPW/M201/CJ-2A which originally had a 97-tooth ring gear with 10-tooth starter motor. Early CJ-3A and M38 used the 124-tooth version, later models changed to 129 teeth. Always verify the tooth count of your existing ring gear before ordering.
Historical context
The Willys L-134 engine flywheel comes in three ring gear versions: 97 teeth (MB/GPW/CJ-2A, 1941-1949), 124 teeth (early CJ-3A/M38, 1949-1952) and 129 teeth (later models from 1950). The ring gear can be replaced by heating and removing it, which allows restorers to adapt the flywheel to their specific starter motor configuration.
