Flywheel ring gear 97 tooth

For L-134 engine

Replacement ring gear for flywheel with 97 teeth. This ring gear fits early Willys L-134 'Go Devil' engines as used in WWII military jeeps and early post-war civilian models. The ring gear is mounted to the flywheel by heating and is an essential component of the starting system.

  • Suitable for early L-134 engine
  • Requires 10-tooth starter pinion
  • Mounting by heating
  • Replaces worn or damaged original ring gear

★ High-quality replacement ring gear meeting original specifications for early Willys 134ci engines.

Application

This 97-tooth ring gear fits flywheels from Willys MB (1941-1945), Ford GPW (1941-1945), Hotchkiss M201, and CJ-2A (1946-1949) with L-134 engine. This was later superseded by 124-tooth (CJ-3A, M38) and 129-tooth (CJ-3B, M38A1) versions.

Installation notes

The old ring gear is removed by heating. The new ring gear must likewise be heated until it expands, after which it can be slid onto the flywheel. Ensure the ring gear is fully seated. Note: check beforehand the number of teeth on your current ring gear and the type of dowel pins (tapered or straight) on your flywheel.

Compatibility

IMPORTANT: This 97-tooth ring gear works ONLY with a 10-tooth starter pinion. The 97-tooth version has a different diametral pitch than the later 124-tooth and 129-tooth ring gears. Later models (CJ-3A from 1949, M38, CJ-3B, M38A1) use a 124- or 129-tooth ring gear with 9-tooth pinion — these are NOT interchangeable. All L-134 flywheels have the same inside diameter, but the ring gears differ in outside diameter and tooth pitch.

Historical context

The 97-tooth ring gear was used on all WWII military jeeps (Willys MB and Ford GPW) and early CJ-2A models until 1949. With the introduction of the CJ-3A in 1949, a change was made to a 124-tooth configuration for improved starting reliability.
