Timing plate engine block

Front engine plate

Metal mounting plate located between the engine block and the timing cover. This plate forms part of the front engine seal and supports the timing cover and engine mounting brackets.

Material

Steel

Position

Front of engine block

Function

Timing cover mounting

Application

L-134 and F-134 engines

Features

  • Mounts between engine block and timing cover
  • Provided with fixing holes for bolts and studs
  • Supports timing cover and possible engine mounting brackets
  • Shape and design dependent on engine variant
  • Essential component during engine dismantling and overhaul

★ Precisely manufactured engine plate for correct positioning of the timing cover and engine mounting.

Installation notes

The timing plate must be removed during engine overhaul to access the timing chain/gears. Note: on chain-driven engines (MB/GPW/M201/early CJ-2A), the timing gear sprocket must be removed first. On gear-driven engines (late CJ-2A/CJ-3A/CJ-3B/M38), the camshaft timing gear must be dismantled. Use new gaskets during reassembly.

Compatibility

The design differs between chain driven and gear driven L-134 engines. Early MB/GPW and early CJ-2A engines sometimes had a timing inspection hole in the plate for checking flywheel markings. Later versions no longer have this hole as timing marks were relocated to the timing cover and crankshaft pulley. Check which version fits your engine block.

Historical context

The L-134 'Go Devil' engine underwent various modifications during production. Around CJ-2A engine number 130859, a larger starter motor was introduced, resulting in a wider engine block flange and partial covering of the timing inspection hole.
