Features
- Precision thickness 0.002 inch for accurate adjustment
- Suitable for both L-head and F-head 134 ci engines
- Stainless steel construction for durability
- Prevents excessive crankshaft movement during clutch operation
- Sold individually — 2 to 4 pieces required per engine
★ Essential component for correct engine assembly. Accurate adjustment of crankshaft endplay is critical for long bearing life and reliable clutch operation.
Application
For all vehicles fitted with Willys 134 ci (2199cc) 4-cylinder engine, both L-head (flathead) and F-head versions. This includes military jeeps with both chain-driven (early MB/GPW) and gear-driven camshafts (late production), as well as civilian jeeps and Hotchkiss M201 variants.
Installation notes
Shims are fitted behind the front main bearing to adjust endplay to 0.004"-0.006" (TM9-1803A specification). Measure endplay with a dial indicator whilst moving the crankshaft fore and aft. First finger-tighten the front bearing cap and tap the crankshaft forward against the rear thrust faces before tightening the bolts. Typically 2-4 shims are required for correct adjustment. Preferably measure with crankshaft pulley, starting handle and nut fitted for most accurate result.
Compatibility
Fits all 134 ci engines (L-134 and F-134) regardless of chain or gear-driven camshaft. NOT suitable for later Hurricane F-head engines or other engine configurations. Shim thickness is universal for all 134 engines — difference in endplay is resolved by varying the number of shims, not the thickness.
Historical context
Crankshaft endplay in the Willys Go Devil engine is entirely controlled by the front main bearing with integral thrust faces. When depressing the clutch, the crankshaft is pushed forward against these bearings — correct adjustment is therefore essential for reliable operation.
