Application

This oil pressure indicator fits Willys MB (1941-1945), Ford GPW (1941-1945) and Hotchkiss M201. The sending unit mounts to the rear of the engine block in the lower oil gallery and transmits the pressure signal via a flexible line to the oil pressure gauge in the dashboard.

Installation notes

The sending unit is mounted in the rear opening of the lower oil gallery on the driver's side of the engine block. Check the connection of the flexible oil line — the original Willys specification for the internal diameter of fittings is crucial for correct oil pressure and flow. When replacing the indicator, it is recommended to also replace the dashboard gauge for an accurate reading.

Compatibility

Suitable for both 6 volt and 12 volt systems. Note: when converting to 12V, a resistance adapter may be required for the dashboard gauge. This mechanical sending unit is not compatible with later electrical warning light systems used from the mid-1950s onwards on CJ-3B and later models.

Historical context

During WWII, mechanical oil pressure indicators were fitted as standard to all Willys MB and Ford GPW jeeps, with a measuring range up to 60 psi. Constant oil pressure monitoring was essential for the reliability of the L-134 'Go Devil' engine under extreme conditions.
