Application
Applications by category: Willys MB, Ford GPW (both with L-134 Go Devil engine and bypass filter system), Hotchkiss M201, and early CJ-2A models (1945-1946) with military junior filter. Later CJ-2A sometimes received smaller civilian filter housing. Not suitable for M38 with Cuno filter or F-134 engine.
Installation notes
Mount on cylinder head with original bracket via two C-brackets. Upper hose runs from oil pressure outlet (behind fuel pump) to filter inlet. Lower hose from filter outlet to timing cover (filtered oil return). Use correct 1/8" NPT to 1/4" inverted flare fittings. Tighten lid hand-tight — not too tight, otherwise lid will deform. Filter must be drained manually during service.
Compatibility
PLEASE NOTE: Military Junior filter (5" diameter housing) is larger than civilian CJ filters. Check whether your vehicle still has the original military-size housing. Not compatible with Cuno filter (early production M38) — that is a friction filter with rotary knob. Purolator and Fram Military Junior filters are both correct, differing only in lid shape (Purolator convex, Fram conical). Element (4¾" high, approximately 4¼" wide) also fits Dodge WC-series lorries.
Historical context
WWII Jeeps came standard with a bypass oil filter from the factory, typically Purolator on Ford GPW and predominantly Fram on Willys MB, although both brands were used interchangeably. Military Junior was the standard US Army specification for light vehicles with four-cylinder engine.
