Application

Specific to Willys MB Slat Grille jeeps (serial numbers MB100001 through MB125809, production November 1941 - March 1942). Also applicable to early standard Willys MB and Ford GPW with chain-driven L-134 engines and early CJ-2A models. Note: at MB engine 288835 (July-August 1943), Willys switched to a configuration using cylinder head studs only.

Installation notes

Torque specification: 65-70 lb-ft (approximately 88-95 Nm) for bolts. Tighten in cross sequence according to TM 10-1513 specifications. Check tension after 500-600 miles of use. 9 cylinder head bolts are required per engine (early production MB/GPW used a combination of 9 bolts + 6 studs).

Compatibility

ONLY for chain-driven L-134 engines as used in Willys MB Slat Grille, early Willys MB, Ford GPW and early CJ-2A. NOT suitable for later Willys MB from engine serial number 288835 (mid-1943), which switched to a configuration using cylinder head studs only. NOT compatible with gear-driven engines from late CJ-2A, CJ-3A, CJ-3B or M38.

Historical context

The Willys MB Slat Grille, produced between November 1941 and March 1942, was the very first production version of the standardised military jeep. Of the total MB production of 361,339 units during WWII, only 25,808 examples were Slat Grille variants, making these rare collectors' items.
