Application
This water temperature gauge is designed for Ford GPW jeeps (1941-1945) and replaces the original GPW10883 instrument. The mechanical sensor must be fitted in the cylinder head via a special adaptor (see thermostat housing section). Corresponds to the specifications of the original Ford GPW dashboard instruments from the WWII production period.
Installation notes
Installation requires a temperature sensor adaptor in the cylinder head (not included). The capillary tube must not be shortened or modified — it is gas-filled and modification will damage the gauge. Connect lighting wire to dashboard illumination. Secure with supplied studs and brackets behind the dashboard.
Compatibility
Specific for Ford GPW dashboard with 52mm instrument holes. Note: not to be confused with the 'paint can lid' version for very early GPW production (SOP until March/April 1942). This standard version is suitable for GPW production from spring 1942 onwards. The original GPW gauges were produced by various manufacturers including Auto-Lite and Stewart-Warner — this is a quality post-war reproduction.
Historical context
The Ford GPW used mechanical water temperature gauges with black dials and external lighting as part of the militarised instrument panel. Originally these gauges were produced by Auto-Lite and Stewart-Warner, with the Stewart-Warner version featuring a flattened metal wrapping around the capillary tube.
