★ This universal distributor replaces the original vacuum advance system with a modern internal centrifugal advance, improving reliability and simplifying maintenance.
Application
Suitable for late CJ-2A (from approximately 1947 with gear-driven camshaft), CJ-3A (1949-1953), CJ-3B (1953-1964) and M38A1 (1952-1966) with L-134 or F-134 engines. NOTE: Not suitable for early Willys MB, Ford GPW or early CJ-2A with chain-driven camshaft.
Installation notes
Installation requires correct timing adjustment. The oil pump shaft must be in the correct position before fitting the distributor. Positive wire from ignition switch to positive terminal of coil, distributor wire to negative terminal of coil. Verify that the mounting plate (advance arm) has sufficient clearance for adjustment — not at the extreme end of the adjustment range.
Compatibility
CRITICAL DISTINCTION: L-134 engines exist in two variants. Early engines (MB/GPW/early CJ-2A until approx. 1946) have CHAIN drive camshaft. Late engines (late CJ-2A, CJ-3A, CJ-3B, M38) have GEAR drive. This distributor is ONLY for gear-driven engines. Use an IGW or IGC model distributor for chain-driven MB/GPW engines.
Historical context
The Willys L-134 'Go Devil' engine underwent a major modification in the mid-1940s from chain to gear drive of the camshaft, which also affected the distributor drive. Auto-Lite was the original supplier of distributors for these vehicles, with models such as the IAD and IAY series.
