Application
This ignition switch fits early Ford GPW models that were originally equipped with a keyed ignition switch. The Ford GPW used a unique ignition switch with a characteristic ribbed bezel ring. From January 1943, many GPWs were also supplied with the late lever-type switch (GPW3686B). Check which type was originally fitted to your vehicle — early keyed type or late lever type.
Installation notes
The ignition switch is fitted in the dashboard via the ribbed bezel ring. Important: the Ford GPW bezel has a smaller aperture size than universal switches — do not use an aftermarket universal switch to avoid having to enlarge the dashboard aperture. Fit with the key cylinder facing upwards. Connect the BAT and IGN terminals correctly according to the 6V electrical diagram.
Compatibility
ONLY suitable for Ford GPW dashboard — the bezel has a unique, smaller aperture size than Willys MB switches. The Willys MB used a different ignition switch (A-2517) with a different bezel ring. Keyed and keyless switches appear identical except for the cylinder and bezel. Original keyed switches are rare — this replica provides a correct replacement without modification to the dashboard.
Historical context
From the start of GPW production, keyed ignition switches were fitted, but as with most military vehicles, this was later changed to keyless toggle-type switches. All WWII keyed switches used the standard H-700 military key.
