Front wheel drive shift fork – Dana 18 transfer case

Front wheel drive shift fork

Part number

A960 / WOA960

Transfer case

Dana 18

Function

Features

  • For Dana 18 transfer case
  • Engages and disengages front axle drive (2WD/4WD)
  • Original specification reproduction
  • Steel construction for durability
  • Critical component for 4x4 functionality

★ Manufactured to original military specifications. Accurately reproduced component for reliable transfer case restoration.

Application

Suitable for vehicles with Dana 18 transfer case. The Dana 18 was the standard offset transfer case in military and early civilian Jeeps, from the MB/GPW through to early CJ models. Note: this is the fork for front wheel drive (front axle engagement), not the range shift fork (high/low).

Installation notes

Installation requires disassembly of transfer case. When replacing, also check shift rail, poppet balls and springs for wear. The fork must move smoothly on the shift rail without play. Lubricate shift rail with transfer case oil during assembly. Adjust poppet mechanism correctly for positive shift engagement.

Compatibility

Fits Dana 18 transfer case only. NOT compatible with Dana 20, Dana 300, or NP231 transfer cases. There are different versions of the Dana 18 (early military with 3/4" intermediate shaft vs. late civilian with 1-1/8" or 1-1/4" shaft), but the shift fork is universal for all Dana 18 variants. Part number is also designated as A-960 or A960.

Historical context

The Dana 18 transfer case was Jeep's first offset transfer case, used from 1941 in the military Willys MB and Ford GPW, continuing until the early 1970s in civilian models. The twin-stick system with separate forks for range (high/low) and drive (2WD/4WD) was characteristic of this robust construction.
