Application

Dana 18 transfer case

Set contents

2 oil seals

Alternative part numbers

A974, 18670.30

Features

  • Double-lip seal for optimal sealing
  • Prevents oil leakage at shift rails
  • Located in front bearing cap
  • 2 pieces required per vehicle
  • Suitable for dual shift lever configuration

★ Quality replacement seal that effectively prevents oil leakage at the shift rails. Essential component when overhauling or maintaining the Dana 18 transfer case.

Application

Dana 18 transfer case as fitted to CJ-2A (1946-1949), CJ-3A (1949-1953), CJ-3B (1953-1964), M38 (1950-1952) and M38A1 (1952-1966). The Dana 18 exists in various versions: early versions with 3/4" intermediate shaft (MB/GPW through early CJ-2A) and later versions with 1-1/8" and 1-1/4" intermediate shaft. The shift rail seals are universal for all Dana 18 variants with dual shifters.

Installation notes

The seals are located on the outside of the front bearing cap where the two shift rods exit. During installation: remove bearing cap, replace old seals, position new seals at correct depth in housing. Before installation, check that shift rails show no burrs or damage that could damage the new seals.

Compatibility

Specific for Dana 18 transfer case with dual shift lever configuration. Not compatible with Dana 20 or Dana 300 transfer cases which use different seal dimensions. Note: early MB/GPW military versions have different internal components but use the same shift rail seals.

Historical context

The Dana Spicer Model 18 transfer case was produced from 1941 for the military MB and GPW and remained in production until the early 1970s in civilian CJ models. The characteristic dual shifter system enabled independent operation of high/low range and 2WD/4WD.
