Application
Fits CJ-2A (1946-1949), CJ-3A (1949-1953), CJ-3B (1953-1964), CJ-5 (1955-1971), M38 (1950-1952) and M38A1 (1953-1971) equipped with Dana 44 rear axle assembly with tapered 10 spline axle shafts. From mid-1950, the Dana 44 was introduced as a replacement for the Dana 41. Important: from 1957 onwards, some vehicles switched to 19 spline axle shafts. Therefore always check your existing axle shaft.
Installation notes
Removal requires wheel nut, wheel hub removal tool (Tool C-319) and axle shaft puller (Tool C-637). Note: keep the adjustment shims carefully during disassembly — these are crucial for correct axle bearing clearance. When fitting, tighten wheel nut to 150-175 lb-ft. Brake disc or drum and bearing retainer must be reused or replaced.
Compatibility
ONLY suitable for Dana 44 with tapered 10 spline axle shafts. NOT compatible with: 19 spline versions (from approx. 1957), 30 spline flanged axle shafts (from 1969-1970), Dana 41 (different spline diameter). For CJ-5 models after 1971, flanged 30 spline axle shafts were used — this axle will NOT fit. Always check the number of splines on your existing axle shaft before ordering.
Historical context
The Dana 44 rear axle assembly was introduced by Willys/Jeep from mid-1950 as successor to the Dana 41, and was used on military (M38, M38A1) and civilian CJ models. The early version with 10 spline tapered axle shafts was standard until the mid-1950s, after which a gradual changeover was made to the stronger 19 spline version.
