Knuckle Steering Right Hand
For Dana 25 front axle
Right-hand knuckle housing for the front axle of WWII military jeeps with Dana 25 closed knuckle axle. This cast iron component forms the crucial connection between the axle and the wheel, in which the kingpin bearings, axle shafts and steering arm are mounted. Installation notes
During assembly, pack the kingpin bearings manually with chassis grease. Fill the knuckle cavity 50% with thick grease or CV grease before mounting the spindle. Adjust the kingpin preload correctly with shims — specification is approximately 8 lbs bearing load. Pay attention to correct lubrication: do NOT use thin gearbox oil, this will leak past the seals and may contaminate brake linings and wheel bearings.
Compatibility
Fits vehicles with Dana 25 closed knuckle front axle (1941-1971). Not compatible with later open knuckle Dana 30 axles. Verify that your vehicle has an 8-bolt hemispherical seal on the rear of the knuckle — this confirms the closed knuckle design. Left and right are not interchangeable.
Historical context
The Dana 25 closed knuckle axle was fitted as standard during WWII on the Willys MB and Ford GPW, and remained in production until 1971 on various civilian CJ models. The closed knuckle design requires regular maintenance according to the original military lubrication orders.
