Axle Shaft to Housing Seal

For Dana 25/27 Front Axle

Oil seal that seals the axle shaft against the axle housing. This component prevents differential oil leakage and keeps dirt and water out of the front axle. Suitable for various military and civilian models fitted with Dana 25 or Dana 27 closed knuckle front axle.

Application

Dana 25/27 front axle

Function

Axle shaft seal

Type

Oil seal

Location

Axle shaft to housing

Features

  • Seal between axle shaft and axle housing
  • Prevents oil leakage from differential
  • Keeps contamination out of axle
  • Suitable for Dana 25 and Dana 27 front axles
  • Replacement part for maintenance and overhaul

★ Essential component for proper front axle sealing. Replace this seal during every axle overhaul or when signs of leakage appear.

Application

Fits vehicles with Dana 25 or Dana 27 closed knuckle front axle. Categories listed include: MB, CJ-2A, CJ-3A, M38, M38A1 and CJ-3B models. Used where the axle shaft enters the axle housing, adjacent to the differential.

Installation notes

Check the axle shaft for damage before fitting the new seal. Thoroughly clean the contact surface. Lubricate the seal with low-grease axle oil before installation. Ensure correct positioning - the seal must sit evenly around the shaft without twisting.

Compatibility

Specific to Dana 25 and Dana 27 closed knuckle front axles. Not compatible with later open-knuckle Dana 30/44 designs. Verify whether your vehicle has a Dana 25 (until approx. 1960-1965) or Dana 27 (from approx. 1961-1971). When in doubt: check the identification plate on the axle tube.

Historical context

The Dana 25 and 27 closed knuckle front axles were used in military Jeeps from 1941 and in civilian CJ models until the early 1970s. This robust construction with oil seals and felt seals withstood severe off-road conditions.
