Application

Navy blue was primarily used during WWII for applying markings on US Army vehicles: registration numbers on the bonnet, unit identification on bumpers, and various stencil markings. From late 1940 to February 1945, blue-drab was the prescribed colour for all vehicle markings, after which it was replaced by white. Navy blue was also used for markings on Navy vehicles.

Installation notes

Apply to clean, dry, grease-free surface. For stencil work: use cardboard or plastic templates. Spray in thin coats to prevent runs. Allow each coat to dry for 10-15 minutes before applying another coat. Protect surrounding surfaces with masking tape and covering paper.

Compatibility

This paint is suitable for markings on all WWII military vehicles where navy blue was prescribed. Note: navy blue is NOT a body colour - US Army vehicles were Olive Drab (OD), Navy vehicles were typically battleship grey. Use navy blue only for markings, numbers and letters.

Historical context

From late 1940 to February 1945, the US Army prescribed that all markings on military vehicles had to be applied in blue-drab (navy blue). This dark colour was difficult to distinguish from the Olive Drab background on black and white photographs, which made it harder for the enemy to recognise unit identification. In February 1945, the regulation was changed to white, but blue-drab remained in use until stocks were exhausted.
