Application

Ford GPW engines were sprayed from May 1942 with M-4084-G grey paint. Early GPW engines (before August 1942) had a cooler slate grey shade, later production a warmer, lighter grey shade. The paint was applied to engine block, cylinder head, oil sump, fuel pump, transmission and related components. Restorers often refer to RAL 7005 as a close colour match for late production.

Installation notes

Apply to thoroughly degreased and lightly sanded surface. For optimal adhesion: remove old paint and rust, degrease with suitable degreaser. Apply in thin coats with brush or spray. Allow to cure for at least 24 hours before starting the engine. Masking surrounding parts prevents unwanted overspray.

Compatibility

IMPORTANT: Ford GPW engines are painted grey — Willys MB engines however were sprayed in Olive Drab green. Use this paint only for Ford GPW assemblies. The grey shade varied during production: early GPW had a darker, cooler shade, late production (1943-1945) a warmer, lighter grey. Transmissions were also sprayed grey, transfer cases were not.

Historical context

Ford began in May 1942 spraying GPW engines in grey paint (specification M-4084-G). This colour was identical to the paint Ford used for their 9N tractor engines, as both were produced in the same assembly building.
