Application
This bracket fits Willys MB, Ford GPW and Hotchkiss M201 vehicles built from mid-1942. The early 'Slat Grill' MB jeeps (serial numbers 100001-103544, approximately December 1941 to early 1942) did not yet have these brackets as standard. The gun rack system was only added later in production.
Installation notes
Fitted to the inside of the lower windscreen frame, left-hand side (driver's side). In combination with the right-hand bracket, this forms the base for the complete gun rack. The rifle was mounted horizontally with the stock on the left, barrel on the right and the trigger facing downward. Bracket must be bolted to the windscreen frame before the gun rack itself is fitted.
Compatibility
CAUTION: Early Willys MB Slat Grill vehicles (up to early 1942) did not have gun rack brackets. Only suitable for late production MB/GPW and all M201. The right-hand bracket (RH) is also required for fitting, this is sold separately. M38 and later models use different brackets and are NOT compatible.
Historical context
The gun rack system was introduced in mid-1942 on the Willys MB and Ford GPW, specifically designed for the safe transport of the M1 Garand, the standard semi-automatic rifle of the US Army. The brackets were welded or bolted to the inside of the windscreen to support the universal gun rack.
