Application
Fits exclusively on Ford GPW built between February 1942 and September 1943 with Ford-manufactured body. Ford ceased its own body production in September 1943 and switched to American Central Manufacturing (ACM) bodies, which require a different pad set configuration. Not compatible with Willys MB.
Installation notes
The firewall pad is installed before wiring and instrumentation. On the Ford GPW, lock nuts are already attached to the firewall for the wiring block, horn and oil can holder, which simplifies installation compared to the early Willys MB. Grommets must usually be installed after routing cables/lines due to the tight fit. Exception: choke and throttle cable passages can be finished in advance.
Compatibility
NOTE: This is the early Ford GPW pad set. Not interchangeable with the later ACM body pad set (September 1943 – end of production) or with Willys MB pad sets. Ford-built bodies are recognisable by the rectangular depression around the tool box locks. Early GPW (before late 1942) had rubber grommets; later early GPW (late 1942 – September 1943) had felt grommets due to wartime rubber shortage.
Historical context
Ford Motor Company produced its own jeep bodies from February 1942 to September 1943 at the Lincoln plant, with a unique firewall configuration that differed from the Willys MB. Due to the acute rubber shortage following the Japanese occupation of Burma in 1942, rubber components such as grommets were quickly replaced with felt, tar-impregnated material and leather – a typical characteristic of Ford's wartime production.
