★ Exact reproduction of the early fuel tank sump, produced to original factory specifications. This sump is an essential component for correct fitting and protection of the fuel tank.
Application
Correct for Willys MB Slat Grill (early 1941 production) up to serial number 118,729. Also used on early Ford GPW from February 1942 to September 1943. Later vehicles received a sump with rounded form to reduce obstacle damage.
Installation notes
Installation per TM 9-803: thoroughly clean the sump recess in the floor panel before fitting. Tank is secured with tank straps and a bolt to the wheel arch panel. On early vehicles (before serial number 118,599) rubber sealing strips were used at front and rear of the sump to keep out stones and dirt. These were later replaced by felt strips due to rubber rationing. The drain plugs are normally only used during wading; keep one set in the glove box.
Compatibility
Note: early sumps have square, straight sides with a flat bottom. Later sumps (after MB serial number 118,729 and late GPW) have a more rounded form. The two types are NOT interchangeable without modification of the floor panel. Early narrow-mouth fuel tanks (before serial number 174,738) require a different seat recess cut-out than late wide-mouth tanks.
Historical context
The early fuel tank sump was part of the initial Willys MB production from November 1941. The square, box-shaped design was later changed to a rounded form to reduce damage during cross-country use. Rubber sealing strips were replaced by felt in 1942 due to wartime rationing.
