Jerrycan Bracket Reniforcement Plate
Jerrycan bracket reinforcement plate
Rear panel reinforcement for jerrycan mounting
Reinforcement plate for the rear panel that absorbs and distributes the load of the jerrycan bracket. ★ This reinforcement plate was added by Willys and Ford from August 1942 onwards to prevent cracking in the rear panel caused by vibrations from the spare wheel and jerrycan. An essential component for correct and durable jerrycan mounting.
Application
The reinforcement plate was added by Willys from August 1942 (around serial number MB-166582) and by Ford from early 1943. Early jeeps without this plate often received field modifications with larger washers, but the reinforcement plate itself was not issued by the military for post-war retrofit.
Installation notes
The plate is mounted on the exterior of the rear panel, at the position where the jerrycan bracket fits. First secure the plate with bolts through the rear panel. Originally, these plates were often also welded to the body panel for additional strength. Then mount the jerrycan bracket (A-4130 / GPW-1140330) with the corresponding bolts through the pre-drilled holes in the reinforcement plate.
Compatibility
Fits late Willys MB (from approx. '42), Ford GPW (from approx. March '43) and Hotchkiss M201. Early script-body jeeps (until mid-1942) did NOT have this plate from the factory – on those vehicles, the jerrycan bracket was mounted directly to the panel or added later as a field modification. Check that your rear panel has the correct mounting holes.
Historical context
The reinforcement plate was introduced as a production modification after it became apparent that the thin rear panel cracked due to vibrations from the spare wheel and the weight of a full jerrycan (20 kg). Ford designed the bracket in January 1943, Willys began with the reinforcement plate as early as August 1942.
