Application
Suitable for Ford GPW jeeps from the production period February 1942 to end of July 1942. These early 'script' GPWs are characterised by the large Ford logo on the rear panel, without jerrycan carrier or trailer socket. Note: this panel is not suitable for later GPWs or for Willys MB vehicles.
Installation notes
Rear panel is mounted between the wheel arches and forms the rear wall of the body. Fixing is done via welded or bolted connections with the side panels, floor plate and hat-channels. Reinforcement plates between rear panel and wheel arches were not introduced until February 1943. For correct installation: carry out trial fitting beforehand and align body on chassis before final welding.
Compatibility
ONLY suitable for early Ford GPW (February–July 1942). NOT compatible with: later Ford GPW without script (from August 1942), Willys MB (which had 'Willys' script), composite bodies (from late 1943), or vehicles with jerrycan carrier. Script jeeps are rare and valuable – always check serial number and build date for correct match.
Historical context
In July 1942, the American military command decided that manufacturer names should no longer be displayed on military equipment. Ford therefore stopped using the script relief on the rear panel. The early 'script GPWs' from February–July 1942 are therefore highly sought after by collectors and are valued 20% higher than later examples.
