Application

These reinforcement plates were fitted to virtually all production periods of the Ford GPW (1942-1945) and Willys MB (1941-1945), as well as the later Hotchkiss M201. The plates are intended for installation beneath the hood catches and distribute the load over a larger area of the thin bonnet steel.

Installation notes

The plates are positioned from the inside against the bonnet, at the location of the hood catches. The four holes in each plate correspond with the mounting bolts of the hood catch. The plates are secured with the same bolts that fix the catches — during installation, first position the plate on the inside, then fit and tighten the catch from the outside.

Compatibility

Note: some early MB bonnets had reinforcement plates that were spot-welded, later versions (particularly late MB and virtually all GPW) had plates secured only with the catch bolts. This set is suitable for both applications. The two holes have different diameters — the larger holes are possibly intended for compatibility with early low slat windscreen catches.

Historical context

The reinforcement plates were necessary because the thin steel of the bonnet could not withstand the repeated stress of opening and closing via the catches. Without this reinforcement, the mounting points would crack or deform.
