Application

Invasion stars of 20 inch diameter were applied from 1943 to bonnets, wings and body sides of Allied military vehicles. The standard 15 inch star was often enlarged in the field to 20 inch diameter by addition of a white circle. This marking was common on WW2 jeeps during the Normandy invasion and subsequent campaigns, and remained in use on post-war military jeeps.

Installation notes

Place stencil on clean, degreased surface. Secure with tape to prevent shifting. Apply paint with spray can or roller in several thin coats for sharpest result. Remove stencil carefully whilst paint is still slightly wet. Bonnet positioning: traditionally approximately 1.75 inches from cowl edge (according to AR 850-5), but varied by unit — consult period photographs for specific marking.

Compatibility

The 20 inch star is historically correct for WW2 invasion markings (1943-1945) and post-war military vehicles. The original factory marking on WW2 jeeps was a 15 inch star; the 20 inch version with circle was applied by field units. For early WW2 vehicles (1941-1943), the 15 inch star without circle is historically more accurate. For M38 and M38A1, 15, 18, 20 or 22 inch stars may occur depending on period and unit.

Historical context

The white five-pointed star was the national symbol of all American tactical vehicles during WW2. From 1943, a circle was added around the star for air recognition during invasion operations — the so-called 'invasion star' — where the total diameter was often 20 inches.
