★ Reproduction of original handbrake backing plate, fitting Dana 18 transfer cases with internal handbrake system.

Application

Suitable for Ford GPW, Hotchkiss M201, Willys CJ-2A (1946-1949), CJ-3A (1949-1953), CJ-3B (1953-1964), and M38 (1950-1952) with Dana 18 transfer case and internally expanding handbrake system. Also usable on late Willys MB models that were equipped with this type of handbrake.

Installation notes

The plate is mounted to the rear bearing cap of the transfer case with four bolts (one short bolt which threads only into the bearing cap, three longer ones which pass through into the transfer case housing). Ensure that the handbrake tension spring is correctly positioned during installation. Use locking wire on the bolts if originally fitted. Tightening torque: 30 ft-lbs (approx. 40 Nm).

Compatibility

NOT suitable for early MB/GPW with external contracting brake. NOT suitable for M38A1 — this model has a different handbrake system with rod operation. Check that your vehicle is equipped with Dana 18 transfer case and a cable-operated handbrake located at the rear of the transfer case.

Historical context

The Dana 18 transfer case with internally expanding handbrake system replaced the earlier external handbrake system during the war. This internal system remained in use until the early 1970s on CJ models and military vehicles.
