Clutch Disc 8½"

For L-134 and F-134 Go Devil Engine

Clutch disc with 8½" diameter for military jeeps and post-war civilian models equipped with L-head and F-head four-cylinder engines. Essential clutch component transmitting power from the engine to the gearbox. Features spring-cushioned, friction-faced segments on hardened steel splined hub.

Diameter

8½ inches (216 mm)

Application

L-134 & F-134 engine

Type

Single dry plate

Mounting

Splined hub, spring-cushioned segments

Features

  • 8½" diameter clutch disc for L-head and F-head engines
  • Spring-cushioned construction with friction-faced segments for smooth power transmission
  • Hardened steel splined hub for mounting on gearbox input shaft
  • Compatible with standard three-finger pressure plate
  • Replacement part for worn or damaged clutch discs

★ Clutch discs must be fitted with the spring-cushioned side facing the pressure plate. Use an alignment tool during installation to ensure correct alignment with the gearbox input shaft.

Application

This 8½" clutch disc fits all vehicles in the category list: Willys MB (1941-1945), Ford GPW (1941-1945), Hotchkiss M201, CJ-2A (1945-1949), CJ-3A (1949-1953), CJ-3B (1953-1964) and M38 (1950-1952) fitted with the L-134 or F-134 four-cylinder engine and T-84 or T-90 gearbox. Note: early models up to approximately 1942 may have used an 8" clutch.

Installation notes

Fit the clutch disc with the spring damper side (longer hub side) facing the pressure plate and short hub side facing the gearbox. Use a clutch alignment tool to centre the disc in the flywheel during installation — this prevents damage to the splines when sliding in the gearbox. Check before installation that the flywheel and pressure plate are clean and flat. Lightly grease the splines on the gearbox input shaft with high-temperature grease, but keep the friction facing grease- and oil-free.

Compatibility

Caution: this 8½" disc is NOT compatible with vehicles using a 9" or 10" clutch (such as later CJ-5/CJ-6 with heavier engines). Always check the diameter of your existing clutch disc before ordering. The 8½" size is standard for all Willys/Ford L-134 and F-134 engines from the 1941-1964 period. Not suitable for V6 or V8 conversions without modified pressure plate.

Historical context

The 8½" single dry plate clutch was introduced by Willys-Overland on the MB and remained the standard for decades for military and civilian jeeps with four-cylinder Go Devil and Hurricane engines. This reliable construction with three pressure plate springs was designed for extreme conditions and minimal maintenance.
