Lunette eye block for 1/4 ton trailer

Cast block with rotating lunette eye for military 1/4 ton trailers. The lunette eye couples to the pintle hook of the towing vehicle and rotates freely in its housing, allowing trailer and vehicle to move independently over uneven terrain.

Material

Cast steel

Type of mounting

Cast housing with rotating eye

Application

1/4 ton military trailer

Components

Block housing with lunette eye (spring, nut and cotter pin excluded)

Features

  • Cast housing for mounting to trailer drawbar
  • Rotating lunette eye for flexible coupling
  • Compatible with military pintle hook system
  • Provided with spring mechanism for shock absorption (spring not included)
  • Robust construction for heavy loads

★ Original-type cast block with lunette eye, essential component for the coupling between trailer and towing vehicle.

Application

Suitable for military 1/4 ton trailers such as Willys MBT, Bantam T-3 and M100. The block is bolted to the drawbars of the trailer. Note: different trailer types (MBT/T-3 vs M100 vs M416) have different castings due to variations in frame widths and angles.

Installation notes

The block is bolted to the trailer drawbars. For complete assembly the following are required: lunette eye, compression nut, spring, curved washer and cotter pin. The lunette eye must be able to rotate freely in the housing — use penetrating oil if seized. When fitting, check the correct angle of the drawbars for your specific trailer type.

Compatibility

IMPORTANT: Check which type of trailer you have. MBT/Bantam T-3 blocks are interchangeable with each other, M100 blocks fit on MBT/T-3 frames. M416 blocks are NOT interchangeable with MBT/M100 due to wider frame (6 inch difference) and different angle of the drawbars. The lunette eye itself can be exchanged between different types, but not the cast block.

Historical context

The lunette coupling system became standard on American military trailers during WWII. The rotating eye and spring mechanism absorb shocks during acceleration and allow trailer and towing vehicle to move independently over rough terrain.
