★ Reproduction component manufactured to original military specifications for reliable fitting of the lunette eye assembly.
Application
Suitable for military 1/4 ton trailers such as Willys MBT (WWII), Bantam T-3 (WWII), M100 (post-war) and M416 (Vietnam-era). Note: whilst the nut is universal, lunette eyes and castings are not always interchangeable between these models due to different drawbar angles.
Installation notes
Nut is tightened onto the threaded section of the lunette eye stud, after the tension spring and washers have been fitted. Note: Bantam T-3 used a threaded connection with nut for both lunette and shock absorbers. Willys MBT used cotter pin for shock absorbers but nut for lunette. Check correct sequence: lunette eye, spring, washer(s), nut.
Compatibility
The nut fits most 1/4 ton trailer lunette assemblies. Note that complete lunette eyes differ between models: MBT/T-3 and M416 lunette eyes are interchangeable (same angle), but M100 lunettes have a different angle and do NOT fit MBT/M416 castings. Check your casting type before ordering parts.
Historical context
The lunette eye coupling was standard on all American military 1/4 ton trailers from WWII through to the 1960s. The system with pivoting eye, tension spring and nut provided shock absorption during sudden acceleration and prevented the trailer from overturning the towing vehicle in the event of tipping.
