★ The M2 Decontaminator bracket was supplied by the Chemical Warfare Service together with the decontamination apparatus. Composite body vehicles had the mounting holes pre-drilled at the standard position beneath the passenger seat from June 1944 onwards.
Application
Authorised mounting locations according to WWII manuals: standard position beneath passenger seat on floor behind right seat along the rise to rear floor panel (from June 1944 on composite body vehicles); alternative positions: on rear of left or right mudguard, between driver's seat and body, top of rear mudguard (inside vehicle). Exact position dependent on military unit and other equipment present.
Installation notes
Fixing with 6 #10 x 3/8" screws with two flat washers, lock washer and nut per screw. Fit rubber anti-rattle discs between bracket and body. On composite body vehicles (ACM II) from June 1944, the holes were pre-drilled, with screws, washers and nuts installed as plugs until the bracket was required.
Compatibility
4 different types of M2 Decontaminator brackets were manufactured by various companies during WWII. All types had the same function but could have slightly different design. The bracket fits vehicles equipped for chemical warfare protection.
Historical context
The M2 Decontaminator was a brass or copper 1.5 quart pump sprayer intended to neutralise chemical warfare agents such as mustard gas and phosgene. Production reached more than 130,000 units per month in spring 1943, with over one million produced in total before the programme was discontinued in October 1943 and resumed on a limited basis in early 1945.
