Application
Used with various US Signal Corps radio systems: SCR-193 (1941-1945), SCR-284 field radio, SCR-506 vehicular radio, SCR-694/BC-1306 (from mid-1944) and the post-war AN/GRC-9. The bag contains antenna sections MS-49 through MS-53, each 1 metre long. Often mounted on jeeps, command cars and other military vehicles with antenna mounts MP-37, MP-48, MP-50 or MP-65.
Installation notes
The five antenna sections are rolled into the canvas bag and secured with the closure. Store in a dry place to prevent corrosion of the aluminium antenna sections. When using: screw sections together in sequence to achieve desired antenna length (1 to 5 metres).
Compatibility
Specifically designed for MS-49, MS-50, MS-51, MS-52 and MS-53 antenna sections (each 1 metre long, aluminium). Not compatible with other mast sections such as MS-54 (longer) or MS-116/117/118 (different configuration, requiring BG-58 bag). Original bags were khaki canvas (early production) or OD green (late war/post-war).
Historical context
The BG-56-A storage bag was part of the standard accessories of American field radios from the early 1940s. Production took place from 1941 into the 1950s by various canvas manufacturers. These bags were deployed on all fronts during WWII and remained in service well into the Korean War.
