★ This MS-51 antenna section was used in combination with VHF and HF radio sets such as the SCR-284, SCR-506, SCR-508, SCR-608 and SCR-610, both in vehicles and halftracks.
Application
The MS-51 was used as the middle section in 3-piece antenna configurations (MS-51, MS-52, MS-53) for FM radio sets such as SCR-608 and SCR-610, and as part of 5-piece configurations (MS-49 through MS-53) for HF radio sets. In jeeps with SCR-610, the MS-51 was sometimes added depending on the vehicle and radio installation. In tank installations, the MS-51 was mounted on an MP-37 mast base, in halftracks on MP-53 bracket with MP-37 base.
Installation notes
The MS-51 screws at the top into the MS-52 and at the bottom onto the MS-53 or directly onto certain mast bases. Note: the thread of MS-52 and smaller sections is too small to fit directly into MP-48 bases - only MS-53 and MS-54 fit there. The connections between sections were secured with colour clamps: MC-423 (red) for MS-52 to MS-51. When used on moving vehicles, the sections must be secured with clamps or tape to prevent loss.
Compatibility
Fits in antenna configurations with MS-52 (on top of MS-51) and MS-53 (below MS-51). Used with VHF sets (3 sections total) and HF sets (5 sections total). Not all radio installations require the MS-51: some VHF sets use only MS-53 and MS-52. The MS-50 and MS-49 were never used in VHF FM sets, only in HF installations.
Historical context
The MS-51 antenna section formed part of the standardised US Signal Corps antenna system during the Second World War. The colour coding of the ends served for rapid identification during assembly under combat conditions.
