Timing Chain Cover Early Type

For L-134 engine with chain drive

Timing chain cover for the Willys L-134 Go Devil engine with chain drive. This early type was fitted to WWII production and early post-war vehicles. Protects the camshaft chain and houses the crankshaft gear oil seal.

Material

Steel, pressed

Type

Early type (chain driven)

Application

L-134 engine with chain drive

Part

Timing chain cover

Features

  • Suitable for early L-134 engines with chain drive
  • Provided with mounting for camshaft thrust plunger stud
  • Includes crankshaft gear oil seal mounting
  • Original WWII specification
  • Replacement part to OEM standard

★ Correct reproduction of the early timing chain cover for authentic restoration of WWII and early post-war military jeeps.

Application

Suitable for Willys MB and Ford GPW (1941-1945) with L-134 Go Devil engine with chain drive (casting 638632, up to engine serial number approx. 44417). Also applicable to early Hotchkiss M201 vehicles still fitted with chain drive. Note: later L-134 engines used gear drive and require a different type of cover.

Installation notes

Check before fitting that your engine has chain drive (not gear drive). Always replace the crankshaft gear oil seal when fitting a new cover. Ensure correct alignment with oil sump — use new gasket and correct torque for bolted connections. Camshaft thrust plunger stud must be correctly positioned.

Compatibility

Exclusively for L-134 engines with CHAIN DRIVE. Not compatible with later L-134 or F-134 engines with gear drive. Early WWII MB/GPW and first CJ-2A production up to engine serial number approx. 44417 had chain drive. Hotchkiss M201 received gear drive from production onwards in most cases — check your specific engine. The two systems are not interchangeable without major modifications.

Historical context

The Willys L-134 Go Devil was produced during WWII with chain drive for the camshaft. After the war, Willys switched to the more reliable gear drive, which marks the distinction between early and late engines.
