SPRING PLUNGER CAMSHAFT
The correct style and specification for the WWII MB Ford GPW Camshaft Plunger Spring.
Camshaft Plunger Spring
For L-134 engine with chain drive
Replacement spring for the camshaft plunger of the L-134 'Go Devil' engine with chain drive. This spring keeps the plunger under tension to maintain the correct axial position of the camshaft. Essential component for engines with camshaft timing chain.

Application L-134 engine with chain drive |
Original part number GPW-6244 / 375908 |
|
Engine type Chain-driven Go Devil |
Function Camshaft plunger spring |
Features
- Replacement spring for camshaft plunger
- For L-134 engine with chain drive
- Original Ford part number GPW-6244
- Original Willys part number 375908
- Maintains correct axial camshaft position
★ Critical component for proper operation of the camshaft chain drive. Replacement recommended during engine maintenance or overhaul.
Application
Fits exclusively on L-134 'Go Devil' engines with chain-driven camshaft: 1941-1945 Willys MB, 1941-1945 Ford GPW, 1946-1947 early CJ-2A (chain-driven), and Hotchkiss M201. NOTE: Does NOT fit late CJ-2A (from late 1947 onwards), CJ-3A, CJ-3B, M38 or later models with gear drive.
Installation notes
The plunger spring mounts behind the plunger that presses against the camshaft front. When fitting, check that the plunger moves freely and the spring has sufficient tension. The spring must keep the plunger constantly against the camshaft to prevent axial play. When replacing camshaft timing chain or camshaft, always check this spring and replace if necessary.
Compatibility
ONLY for chain-driven L-134 engines (1941-1947). NOT compatible with gear-driven L-134 engines (late 1947 onwards) or F-134 Hurricane engines — these have a different system with thrust plate instead of plunger spring. The difference between chain drive and gear drive is a critical factor for engine components.
Historical context
The early L-134 'Go Devil' engines used a camshaft timing chain with plunger system. From late 1947 onwards, Willys switched to gear drive, a more robust solution for civilian production that was used until 1971.
