For L-134 engine with chain drive

Crankshaft sprocket for the L-134 'Go Devil' engine with chain-driven camshaft. This sprocket has 18 teeth and is used in combination with the timing chain. The crankshaft is cross-drilled at the front for oil supply to the crankshaft sprocket.

Application

L-134 chain drive

Number of teeth

18 teeth

Part number

WO638459

Engine type

4-134 CI L-head flathead

Features

  • 18-tooth crankshaft sprocket for timing chain
  • For L-134 engine with chain-driven camshaft
  • Crankshaft has oil drilling for sprocket lubrication
  • Original Willys part number WO638459
  • Fitted with Woodruff key to crankshaft

★ Original-specification replacement part for restoration of chain-driven engines.

Application

This crankshaft sprocket is specific to L-134 engines with chain-driven camshaft. This configuration was used in all Willys MB (1941-1945), Ford GPW (1941-1945), Hotchkiss M201, and early CJ-2A (up to engine serial number 44417, mid-1946). Later, timing gears were introduced. Check that your engine has chain drive before ordering.

Installation notes

When fitting the timing components, the timing mark on the crankshaft sprocket must be opposite the timing mark on the camshaft sprocket. The Woodruff key must be correctly positioned in the crankshaft slot. Check the oil drilling in the crankshaft — this must be present for chain lubrication.

Compatibility

IMPORTANT: This part does NOT fit gear-driven engines. From mid-1946 (engine serial number 44418 onwards), most CJ-2A, all CJ-3A, CJ-3B and M38 engines used direct gear drive without chain. Check your engine configuration: chain drive has engine block casting 638632, gear drive typically has casting 641087.

Historical context

The L-134 'Go Devil' engine with chain drive was standard during WWII production of the ¼-ton 4x4 truck. After the war, Willys switched to direct gear drive for greater reliability and simpler maintenance.
